Shopify Plus vs Shopify: Do You Actually Need to Upgrade in 2026?

Do you actually need Shopify Plus? A plain comparison of Shopify Plus vs Shopify for Indian D2C brands: cost, features, and the signs that say it is time to upgrade.

Most Indian D2C brands do not need to upgrade to Shopify Plus yet. In the Shopify Plus vs Shopify decision, standard Shopify (Basic, Grow or Advanced) already covers a growing store. Plus is worth its much higher price only when you need what the standard plans cannot do, such as deep checkout customisation, wholesale selling, several stores under one account, or very high order volume.

This guide compares Shopify Plus and Shopify on cost and features, explains the signs that say it is time to upgrade, shows why the usual shortcuts, like revenue alone or payment fees alone, mislead brands, and ends with a decision guide by stage.

What Shopify Plus Adds

Checkout customisation

Checkout is the biggest practical difference. Plus stores can customise the checkout through Checkout Extensibility, which uses apps and APIs rather than editing the checkout code directly. That lets you add custom fields, branding, upsells and logic at the point where customers pay. On standard plans you can change much less. If checkout is where your store loses sales, this is the feature that matters most, and it ties closely to the wider work of ecommerce marketing and conversion.

Expansion stores and multi region selling

Plus lets you run additional stores under the same contract, which suits brands that sell in several countries, run separate brands, or keep a wholesale store apart from the consumer store. A single market D2C brand rarely needs this.

B2B and wholesale

If a meaningful part of your revenue comes from wholesale buyers with custom pricing, catalogues and payment terms, Plus offers dedicated tools for it. Brands that sell only to consumers can ignore this.

Automation and sale tools

Plus includes campaign automation and flash sale capabilities that help teams run big launches smoothly. These save time for large teams, but they are rarely the reason to upgrade by themselves.

Scale and support

Shopify positions Plus for very high traffic and large catalogues, and gives Plus merchants a dedicated partner network. A store that is not yet near the limits of the standard plans will not feel this difference day to day.

What Shopify Plus Costs

Shopify Plus starts at ₹1,75,000 per month on Shopify's India pricing page, against ₹22,680 per month for the Advanced plan on annual billing. The gap is about ₹1,52,000 per month, which is roughly ₹18.3 lakh more per year before apps, development or support (our own arithmetic from those listed prices).

A common idea is that Plus pays for itself through lower payment fees. Run the numbers for your case. The third party payment fee falls from 0.6% on Advanced to 0.2% on Plus, a saving of 0.4%. On ₹10 crore of sales through third party gateways, that is ₹4 lakh a year, far below the extra ₹18.3 lakh in subscription. Payment fees alone will not justify the upgrade for most Indian brands.

Moving to Plus also carries development cost. Published Indian cost guides place Shopify Plus projects well above standard builds, so read our guide to Shopify development cost in India before you plan the budget.

The upgrade rule of thumb

Upgrade for a capability you need and can name, not for the badge. If you cannot point to a specific checkout, wholesale or multi store requirement that standard Shopify blocks, wait.

Signs You Should Upgrade to Shopify Plus

·        Checkout limits are costing you sales. You have tested your checkout and need changes that standard plans do not allow.

·        You sell wholesale at scale. B2B buyers need custom pricing, catalogues and terms that are hard to manage in a consumer store.

·        You run several stores. Different countries, brands or channels need separate storefronts with shared control.

·        Traffic is very high and rising. Sale days and campaigns put real pressure on the store, and downtime would be costly.

·        A large team needs more control. You need advanced workflows, permissions or automation across many people.

Notice that revenue is not on the list by itself. Published guides place the point where Plus starts to pay off anywhere from about $1 million to $3 million or more in annual revenue, and they disagree because the answer depends on which features you need. In rupee terms, most brands in the ₹50 lakh to ₹5 crore range sit well below where Plus usually makes sense.

Signs You Do Not Need Shopify Plus Yet

·        You mainly sell to consumers in one market.

·        Your checkout works well and converts at a healthy rate.

·        You are still choosing between Basic, Grow and Advanced.

·        Your main challenge is traffic or conversion, not platform limits.

In that last case, money spent on a Plus subscription is usually better spent on better creative, ads and conversion work. Platform upgrades do not fix a weak offer.

What to Prepare Before You Upgrade

·        List your must have features. Write down each thing standard Shopify blocks, so the upgrade has a clear goal.

·        Audit your apps and checkout changes. Some customisations need rebuilding on Checkout Extensibility.

·        Plan the budget. Count the subscription, development and support together.

·        Set a success measure. Pick one number, such as checkout conversion, to judge the upgrade against.

Plus is arranged through Shopify directly, so speak to Shopify and a development partner before you commit.

Our Honest View

Digifyce builds on both standard Shopify and Shopify Plus, so we have no reason to push an upgrade you do not need. For most D2C brands in our market, a well built store on standard Shopify, supported by strong marketing, grows further than a Plus store with the same budget spent on the subscription instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Shopify Plus worth it for an Indian D2C brand?

Only if you need something standard Shopify blocks, such as deep checkout customisation, wholesale selling, several stores or very high traffic. For most D2C brands in the ₹50 lakh to ₹5 crore range, the Advanced plan is enough, and the Plus subscription is better spent on growth.

How much does Shopify Plus cost in India?

Shopify Plus starts at ₹1,75,000 per month on Shopify's India pricing page as of September 2026, compared with ₹22,680 per month for Advanced on annual billing. That is about ₹18.3 lakh more per year before apps, development and support. Always confirm current prices with Shopify.

What is the difference between Shopify Advanced and Shopify Plus?

Advanced is a self serve plan for growing stores. Plus adds checkout customisation through Checkout Extensibility, expansion stores, dedicated B2B tools, automation and a lower third party payment fee of 0.2%. It also costs far more per month, so upgrade only for features you need.

At what revenue should I upgrade to Shopify Plus?

There is no single number. Published guides place the point between about $1 million and $3 million or more in annual revenue, and they disagree because it depends on your needs. Decide on features and checkout limits first, and treat revenue as a rough guide only.

Do I need Shopify Plus to customise my checkout?

For full checkout customisation, usually yes. Checkout Extensibility, which lets you add custom logic and branding at checkout, is a Shopify Plus feature. Standard plans allow far fewer changes. Check exactly what you need first, because some goals can be met with standard settings and apps.
